Invisalign: How does it work?

Are you curious about Invisalign®? At Skelton Orthodontics, we proudly offer these invisible aligners that don’t use brackets or wires. If you’re looking for a more subtle treatment option, Invisalign may be right for you.

How does it work?

At your appointment, we’ll make a set of aligners customized to your teeth using 3D computer imaging technology. You will wear your aligners for approximately two weeks before switching them out for the next set.

During your day, feel free to remove the aligners when you eat and as you brush and floss your teeth.  As you replace each set, your teeth will slightly move each day until they reach the final position we prescribe.

Throughout your treatment, you’ll visit our office roughly every six weeks to ensure that treatment is progressing. Most people wear their aligners for six to 18 months, but treatment time varies depending on the individual.

If you or your child needs braces, contact us today to schedule an appointment. You may be a candidate for Invisalign®!

common orthodontic problems

Common Orthodontic Problems

Many common orthodontic problems include crowding, spacing, underbites, overbites, and other uncomfortable issues. A bad bite can make it difficult to speak, cause teeth and enamel to wear down prematurely, and increase your chances of teeth and jaw injuries. If you notice teeth and jaw bone misalignment, you may need orthodontic treatment.

In honor of National Orthodontic Health Month this October, take the time to assess your family’s smile. Here are some common orthodontic problems.

Some teeth don’t have enough room to develop along the gum line, leading to crowding. It may be difficult to reach every area of the tooth’s surface, making it hard to clean teeth thoroughly.

Spacing issues can stem from a cosmetic issue or missing teeth and may make it difficult to chew. In addition, spacing problems in one area can also lead to crowding in another.

When the top-front teeth extend over the lower-front teeth, overbites occur. This can cause the bottom-front teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

An underbite happens when the bottom jaw moves outward, causing the lower-front teeth to extend in front of the upper-front teeth.

An openbite occurs when there is no overlap between the top- and bottom-front teeth. This can impact your ability to chew. In young children, tongue thrusting or thumb sucking may be the culprits.

Crossbites show when the upper teeth fall inside the lower teeth. Crossbites may cause misaligned jaw growth.

If you or your child experiences any of these issues, contact us today to schedule a FREE initial consultation! Also, check out our Facebook page for more National Orthodontic Health Month facts!

diy braces trend

DIY Braces Trend: Parents Beware

Have you seen the commercials on tv and considered do-it-yourself (DIY) braces? Maybe your child has watched one of the thousands of videos on at-home orthodontic care. The American Association of Orthodontists urges partents to beware of these videos and tv commericals, as they can create serious oral health damage!

Orthodontic care should not be attempted at home. Here is a great article about the dangers of attempting to straighten teeth at home. Using objects found in the home to straighten teeth can lead to permanent loss of teeth!

Signs that your child may be attempting to straighten teeth at home are:

  • foreign objects around teeth such as paperclips, rubber bands, or dental floss
  • extruded upper front teeth
  • loose permanent teeth
  • swollen or bleeding gums
  • unexplained oral and facial discomfort

Dr. Aimee Skelton is highly trained, experienced, and knowledgeable in orthodontics. She provides exceptional care to all her patients, so there is no need to attempt DIY braces at home!

Continuing Education 2016: Success!

Every year during the fall, Dr. Aimee Skelton and her team host a continuing education event. This is an event where local dentists and their staff come to grow their knowledge about the dental field!

This year, with the help of Nashville Dental, the Skelton Orthodontics team welcomed Dr. Jon Holmes, DMD, MD, FACS, FICD as the guest speaker. Dr. Holmes is an oral surgeon from Birmingham who happens to love educating others about oral surgery.

We had so much fun giving away door prizes and taking pictures on our photo booth!
