As an orthodontic team, October is one of our favorite months! Not only do we love the sweater weather, the fun costumes, and pumpkin spice lattes... it's National Orthodontic Health Month! Why do you we love celebrating this month? We love to spread awareness of how important a healthy and beautiful smile is.
Why is Orthodontic Treatment Important?
Some people have the misconception that orthodontic treatment is simply cosmetic. Of course, a beautiful, straight smile is a huge benefit, but the orthodontic treatment also has other benefits that run much deeper than that! Misaligned bites and over-crowded teeth cause health issues such as headaches, tooth decay, periodontal disease, speech problems, and more. Crooked teeth are harder to clean and create more room for plaque build-up since you can't reach all of those hard-to-reach spots! Taking good care of your mouth is something we should all be passionate about because without good oral care your mouth and wallet will be hurting.
Start Your Orthodontic Journey by Age 7
Starting your orthodontic journey early can be super beneficial in the long run. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that every child be seen by an orthodontist around the age of 7. This doesn't mean your child has to have braces put on by age 7 but they should be seen by then to stay on track for a lifetime of good oral health. Catching any problematic issues early will be much easier on everyone! The longer you wait with orthodontic issues, the harder it will be to correct.
